Sonder

Sonder

Is there a name for what I am feeling?

I look out the window and there’s the blur of a passing traffic
Strangers rushing to dive into destiny
Destiny rushing towards them
Both quite naïve to what the future holds
Who am I to them?

I look around the bus and there’s the sweet buzz of a budding childhood
Some laughter here, some cries there
Kids running about, falling, tripping
An impatience brewing inside them
A longing for home
Who am I to them?

I hear the faint sound of an ice cream vendor ringing his bell
He carries a dejected look on his face
The Sun shines ablaze as he serves his last scoop
Hoping to pack up and call it a day
He sighs, as I think
Who am I to him?

There’s an old lady walking down the pathway
With a bag of vegetables and two children by her side
She wears a smile that reaches her eyes
And looks around the busy street
Did she look at me?
Or was it just my imagination?
Who am I to her?

Who am I to her and the ten thousand people
I cross my paths with but never quite meet?
Who am I to the little boy who asks me to do his math sum
but disappears as soon as he comes?
Who am I to the man who drives me to school every day
but I know not his name?
Who am I to the hundreds of kids I share
my classes with but never could interact?
Who am I to you?
Who am I to this world?

Sonder. Do you feel it too?

  3. Poignant and penetrative. The impact of the question mark lingers on in the mind of the reader and provokes him to think that is the hustle and bustle of life worth the attention that we are giving it , or we need to slow down and relish and enjoy the sights and sounds scattered around us.

  7. Who am I ?
Will it remain an eternal query…
    Or
Will it translate it into something like
How can I be of some value add to these Random passerby but a Human Being seeking his own meaning of his own existence without much thoughts & without such deep realisations
Either ways – These queries are interesting & intriguing path towards profound wisdom

  9. Manasi your write up has well illustrated your depth of understanding this materialistic world. Somewhere you are trying to appeal people to get involved emotionally which is highly admirable. God bless you dear.

  11. Bohr was a particle, Schrodinger was a wave. Who am I they asked each other. They had to reconcile without a definite answer. You reverberate their philosophy for me in your wonderful poem, Manasi.. God bless you..

  13. Being aware of sonder, cements the flavour of empathy in a person’s attitude. It makes him understand that every one has his own script to follow, villain to fight with so as to get the happy ending.
I am glad, proud and happy that you realised the sonder?.
As usual! Very well written!! Waiting for the next??
